The late Frank Sanford - Conté pencil

It's sad when someone leaves us. Frank was a great guy and we all admired him. He lived in a one-street town that he built himself in the Mohave Desert

They had to truck water into the property, and with the waste water they grew a tight little garden of fruit and flowers. Frank died many years ago. Wife Lorna passed away recently - a super talented writer. We miss them.

Throwback "Sugarcane Maui"

Everytime I enter the kitchen I pass this little painting in the hallway. It's a throwback from our trip to Maui a couple years ago. It's tiny. If you want it, email me at kyknoord@outlook.com

"Boathouse" pastel

McMicking Point, a little-known beach in Victoria BC. I used pastels. (Ken Faulks and Delia Sansom were also painting here on that day). I like pastels and will do more of them I think, even tho' they don't seem to get the same attention as oils or the other trad media. Press the image for a bigger view

'Towhee Territory'

Last of the November colour
A sunny spot out of the cold breeze
Talking with all the Towhees
They pop out of the cover
Seeking that funny accent
That keeps answering their calls

But its just a bird lover

'October Sun - Swan Lake'

The October sun's warmth feels like a stranger
This short respite from the rain and wind
Sharing this lull with the Towhee's and Jay's
Their warning calls as the Cooper's

Glides low over our heads
Hunting with all the avian activity below it
I make a new memory with each blink
Breathing it in along with the scent of
Damp leaves and dead grass and the warmth...

'October Oaks - Highrock'

As we await another wind and rain storm here
on southern Vancouver Island, it is a bit
of a treat to look back at some recent
plein airs. When thoughts of wind and of heavy rain
seemed distant and remote on such a beautiful
early fall afternoon up on Highrock.

"Canoe and Dinghy beached" oil 8x10

My eye searches for a familiar but unusual setting, and I found it at the Oak Bay Marina in Victoria BC where these two were nesting together.

Portraits as training for artists

Sometimes the sitter will not accept your impression of him or her for reasons that have nothing to do with the accuracy of your rendering. Take heart, 'cos a portrait painting is a search not only for accuracy but also for that intangible look that reveals the person. I was happy with my oil sketch of Carolyn with her great hair. Like Sargent before me, I chose not to blend the strokes, but to lap them value against value. A great training lesson for moi.

Summer Solstice

'Summer Solstice'
 oil on wood panel
8 x 10

Oh so quickly it was here
That summer solstice time of year

The fields in evening
Are a treasure to share
With Goldfinch and Swallows in the air
The deer are there in velvet
A Doves mournful call drifts through the air
Mingling with the scent of fresh mown hay
